Awww Monday September 12, 2022

This past weekend we went to Astoria, Oregon for a reunion with many of Russell's Special Forces buddies. We barbequed and we all brought side dishes to share. It was a great time!

The day before Russell and I explored the Lewis and Clark National Historic Park and spent some time looking at Fort Clatsop and hiking one of the many trails.

We walked a total of 2 miles along the
Columbia River- so very peaceful!
The next day was the BBQ day! It was held in
the old enormous Bumble Bee cannery that now has
a lot of interesting history and lots of rooms
full of machinery exhibits. In addition there
are shops with lots of fun things
to purchase and also some restaurants.
Our reunion was held in the banquet room that had
wonderful views of ships and the Columbia River.
Everyone had a great time catchimg up, laughing
and telling stories! Here are a few photos:

It was very smoky that day because of all the
wildfires in Oregon.

This pigeon watched me closely for a bit....

Last shot of the day- that's me
waving hello to all of you!
Have a great week!
Thanks Sandee!!!

Thankful Thursday August 23, 2018

It's terrifying enough to be close to active wildfires,
but I cannot imagine being a firefighter.
We are all so thankful for these brave men and women
who  truly put their lives on the line.

Smoky Sunrise July 7, 2018

A wildfire near the Oregon/California border
caused our skies to be reddish and smoky this morning.
Thank goodness for all the brave firefighters.

It's Awww Monday! September 4, 2017

Doe with one of her two fawns.
We keep large saucers filled with water
for all our wildlife-especially during fire season.

As you can see from my header photo
we have a lot of smoke from all the
wildfires around us. So far except for all the smoke we have no fires close to us.
The closest was in Dunsmuir and thanks to all the volunteers and Cal Fire
the Bradley fire is under control.
Firefighters are our heroes.
Stay safe where ever you are!

Six Words and Sunday Shadows August 8-9, 2015

We have been busy this week.....

Orange sunrise due to wildfires
August 7, 2015

Smoky skies create an eerie light
inside our home....

Russell has been tremendously
busy cutting down dead trees due to pine beetles and the drought.

Lots of nicely stacked wood
waiting for the log splitter we
will be borrowing from friends.

Everywhere I turn there's another pile!

I think the "Chefette" owes him
a big steak dinner??

Meanwhile.....

We listened to these incredible musicians...
who are here for a week of study
and performances.
This is the third year for this event.

And after our Friday hike they came
to a friends home to play after
we had eaten our pot luck lunch...

And here's why children should have
music lessons....

Have a great week and do visit

Photos from Horrific and Devastating Fire in Weed, California

Our little town of Weed had a wildfire
rampage through the NE side.
No injuries nor fatalities, but
100+ structures were destroyed;
mostly homes and some businesses.
Our little library was destroyed also.

Six Words and Sunday Shadows! August 2-3, 2014

Eerie light created by numerous wildfires....
We've had lots of lightning and consequently
there are currently multiple lightning-sparked fires
burning in Siskiyou County in both federal and state land.
There were over 955 downstrikes recorded.

Foraging Chipmunk  August 1, 2014

We have not had sufficient snowpack
for at least the past 3 years.
Look at the photos below and compare.
We are in a severe drought.
Hopefully this winter we get snowed in!!!

Saturdays Six Words and Sunday Shadows May 3-4, 2014

Carefully living in a wildfire zone....
Because we live in a wild fire zone, we take
care to keep Manzanita and other highly
flammable shrubs cut back and far away
from our home. This means that we periodically
remove and either burn or chip the piles of brush.
Today we are renting a big chipper with a neighbor.
We'll chip up all our piles and then help
our neighbor do the same on his property.
We will use all the chips for weed deterrent mulch.
Plus the chips will keep the dust down
in addition to keeping the ground moist.
Clearing the Manzanita also enables
native wild flowers to appear!

One of many piles of Manzanita waiting for the chipper!
