Awww Monday! February 27, 2023

We have had an amazing snow fest
here in the Pacific Northwest!

The Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington area hasn’t seen this much snow all at once in 80 years. “This is a big deal,” said Tonja Fransen, a meteorologist at the local National Weather Service office. Portland International Airport recorded 10.8 inches Wednesday, beating out the 9.3 inches that fell on a January day in 1956. Since snowfall record-keeping at the airport began in 1939, the greatest snow accumulation over a day was 14.4 inches in 1943.

Needless to say I have been feeding the birds and squirrels plus the occasional rabbit with sunflower seeds and shelled peanuts! We can watch them from our dining room windows - as does Lucy our cat! It's a live nature show for all of us!

Happy Tuesday December 6, 2022

Today we had an amazing wildlife show
out our dining room window. I had
purchased some shelled peanuts in
the pet store to put out for the squirrels.
And I also put out bird seeds for the birds to enjoy!
FYI: If you put out peanuts in the shell they
make a mess for someone to clean up!
So, not only did the peanuts attract the
squirrels, but also Steller Jays, a Flicker
and several Varied Thrushes
They also enjoyed the bird seeds.
I thought about making a small film, but when I
thought about it I realized it would spook
all the critters and they would leave.
So I just took one photo and just enjoyed the show!
Have a fun day today and every day!

Thankful Thursday January 6, 2022

 Thanks Brian for Thankful Thursday!

I love the animals that live outside our home.
Some folks think they are pests....
They were here before us and
I will enjoy their antics !

Have a lovely day!

Thankful Thursday! May 28, 2020

Before we moved to Vancouver Washington about
18 months ago we lived for 6 years on 10 and 1/2 acres
outside of Mt Shasta California. We were surrounded
not only by mountains, but also by all sorts of
wild animals such as deer, bear, cougar, coyotes,
foxes, bobcats, squirrels, wild turkeys and jack rabbits.
So when we moved up north I knew I would really miss
all the wild animals that we would see every day.

So when we moved here we made sure that
we found a home that we could look out
our windows and not see a fence, but would
observe birds, bunnies and squirrels in
the protected green space next to our home.
And obviously we did!
We are so grateful and thankful that we
found this tiny peaceful paradise to live
next to and enjoy.

There is even not far from us a large pasture
where cows graze. Just a few minutes to walk there.

Some of our neighbors would just as soon
not have the bunnies in their gardens,
but I learned to be ambivalent about the
wildlife eating my plants while living
in the mountains. If they ate something...
guess what ? I didn't plant it again.
I learned what they didn't like and that is
what I used for landscaping
and also what I planted in pots.
And that is what I do here.
Bunnies do not like herbs such as thyme,
lavender, rosemary, oregano and even basil.
Instead of growing tomatoes etc I go
to the lovely Farmers Market here that is
open even now with the virus situation.
They have rules and I am thankful they do
so we can go shopping and support our farmers!
Have a wonderful day, stay safe and be happy!
Thanks Brian for Thankful Thursday!

Awww Monday! May 4, 2020

A few weeks ago we took a long neighborhood
walk and I spotted an evergreen hedge that
had some little round multi-faceted green "nuts/cones" on the ends of some branches.
I picked 3 and brought them home
to see what would happen if I put them out in the sun.
The birds, the rabbits and the squirrels ignored them.
Then they began to turn brown and began to open.
I could see little seeds inside them.
One disappeared and I spotted this squirrel eating one.
You can see the last one on the brick in front of the owl.
I should have taken a close up photo but darn I did not.
Now I will have to try and remember where I
found them on our 90 minute neighborhood wander.
I want to know what the plant is called.
Tried googling "round multi-faceted nut" .
But got nowhere. Any ideas out there?
The evergreen bush looked sort of like an Arborvitae.
But the "nuts/cones"on Arborvitae look different.
Have a lovely day !

Six Words and Sunday Shadows January 2-3, 2016

Can you guess where I am?

Meanwhile back at home.....

" I know they are here somewhere"

"Dang....where did they go ?"

The squirrel eventually found his acorns!

Just Desserts and All That Other Nonsense....

It's Thanksgiving today and all I have to do

is make a few desserts for our friends Malia and Daniel

who have invited us over to have dinner with their family

(more photos on that later)

So, first I made a Tarte Tatin- French apple caramel tart...

Then the traditional Pumpkin Pie ....

....and I could NOT help myself-

I also made a Pear Caramel Gingerbread Cake...

whew....fun though!

Now- onto other just desserts....

While our chickens Moochy, Blondie

and Michelle spent time out in the rain....

they LOVE being out of the coop...and don't

try to convince them otherwise...

the local squirrel was helping himself to chicken feed...

Oodles of Bushtits were feasting on a little bit of

suet....need to go shopping for more tomorrow...

Russell was downstairs finishing the huge project

of installing a gas fireplace insert.

Other than getting some help moving the old wood

stove out and placing the new insert into it's place

Russell did it all himself-from hooking up the gas line,

installing the chimney liner and electrical connections required.

It took Russell about a week to complete and now the

city folks can come inspect his work.
Please note all the soot etc on his face....
Cinderfella????
Russell is amazing to me- he can do anything!

Below is a photo of the stove - what an improvement!

Looks great- will keep our downstairs warm

and no more hauling wood indoors...!
