Happy Hanukkah and Happy Thanksgiving!

It's a beautiful morning...

Making Challah to take to our neighbors...

Recipe books out for Challah and pumpkin pies...

Ta dah! By 10:30am I've made the pies, Challah
and three little custards from leftover pie filling.
Have a Happy Day!!

For those of you who are wondering why
Hanukkah is so early this year here's a short explanation:
Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar.

Just Desserts and All That Other Nonsense....

It's Thanksgiving today and all I have to do

is make a few desserts for our friends Malia and Daniel

who have invited us over to have dinner with their family

(more photos on that later)

So, first I made a Tarte Tatin- French apple caramel tart...

Then the traditional Pumpkin Pie ....

....and I could NOT help myself-

I also made a Pear Caramel Gingerbread Cake...

whew....fun though!

Now- onto other just desserts....

While our chickens Moochy, Blondie

and Michelle spent time out in the rain....

they LOVE being out of the coop...and don't

try to convince them otherwise...

the local squirrel was helping himself to chicken feed...

Oodles of Bushtits were feasting on a little bit of

suet....need to go shopping for more tomorrow...

Russell was downstairs finishing the huge project

of installing a gas fireplace insert.

Other than getting some help moving the old wood

stove out and placing the new insert into it's place

Russell did it all himself-from hooking up the gas line,

installing the chimney liner and electrical connections required.

It took Russell about a week to complete and now the

city folks can come inspect his work.
Please note all the soot etc on his face....
Cinderfella????
Russell is amazing to me- he can do anything!

Below is a photo of the stove - what an improvement!

Looks great- will keep our downstairs warm

and no more hauling wood indoors...!

It's Fall and I'm Back in the House a Bit More!

We have discovered a new great place for coffee in Lake Oswego.
It's called Blue Joe's, located on 2nd and B street. It has delicious
coffee, superb service and great atmosphere-a home away from home!

Back in the house more translates to I am cooking more and I am making
more baby quilts and starting up some Christmas gifts! Below is a baby
quilt I am making for Chantal and Berry's little boy due in December...

Grace asked me just a few days ago for my Pumpkin Pie recipe which
is found in the Joy of Cooking cookbook-so here it is Grace:

First off you have to cook the pumpkin.....

Then you make the pie! Bon appetit!

Happy Thanksgiving !

Here's my first attempt at making a rather complex (for me)dessert!
It turned out very tasty-although it took one hour just to construct it.
Good thing we weren't on a timed schedule.....You can see more photos on my flickr plus I have the recipe posted there as well.
Cheers!
