Winter driving is such a pain
Slogging to work in all the rain
And then rain becomes pretty snow
Forget work- and grab the Bordeaux
Light the fire-sit down and relax
Winter can suck and that's a fact!

Every week Eric Alder posts a photo
to challenge our creativity.
Go to Bifocal Univision and play
along while seeing more photos

Cheers- drive safely!

"Visitor "
  photograph by Eric Alder

The Family Dog

Living in the now
So tolerant and loving
Four legged loyalty
Patiently waits
For us to come home
Greeted by warm joy
and a happy tail.

Hard scrabble
Scratching against an impermeable surface
Glass ceiling resists

As a white single mom in the early 1970's
I personally experienced discrimination.
It still exists.

It's deja vue all over again
I know I've been here before
Is this the road less taken?
This all looks so familiar
I surely am not mistaken

I remember that gray overpass
With the large tree on the right
It's deja vue all over again
 and if  I were to make a bet
You know that I would win

There once was a Scot named Rick
Who was a master at laying brick
He began using clinkers
 Saying "I'm not a stinker,
I'm just designing with a thrifty trick"
~~~~~~~~~
Each week Eric Alder posts one of his photos challenging
us to create a poem, a short story or whatever based on the photo.
And my goodness do have a great week!
~~~~~~~
Info on Clinkers:
In early brick firing kilns, the surface of the bricks that were too close to the fire changed into the volcanic textures and darker/purplish colors. They were often discarded, but around 1900, these bricks were discovered by architects to be usable, distinctive and charming in architectural detailing, adding the earthy quality favored by Arts and Crafts style designers. Modern brick-making techniques can recreate the appearance of these bricks and produce a more consistent product.

Powerful machines brought jobs
With growth and prosperity
Sometimes run by the mobs
But mostly cranium dexterity

No one had the foresight
Nor keen observation
Those gray plumes of night
Would bring devastation

Richmond CA Oli Refineries August 2013

As a child I thought oil refineries at night were
beautiful with all the plumes of smoke and
twinkling lights. Now I know better.

The Unhappy Stove

Here I sit all alone
Cold and abandoned
Shoved off to the dump
It's really quite rotten

You've chosen another
To roast your turkey-
Baking the dressing
I'm totally forgotten

All those years
You depended on me
To make lump free gravys
And bake those perfect pies

I miss the family and
The heart of your kitchen
Hearing clinks of forks
 And happy tummy-full sighs
~~~~~~
Happy Thanksgiving !!
Lost Potion  photo by Eric Alder
Everyone is all a twitter
Disappearing glaciers
How we need to change
And make things better
The problem is complex
It's not an easy fix
The problem lies with our
Unchecked sex
Heedless procreation
Is the root of Earth's woes
Mother Nature will fix this
With our extinction
~~~~~~~~~

Dinosaurs roamed our planet for well over 200 million years.
We humans have really only been here for maybe 5 million years.
As Pogo said "We have met the enemy and he is us."

Goblins in the gloom
Paper bags rustling
Witches riding brooms
Ghosts are bustling
Shrieks of delight
Heard in the park
Halloween's fun
Being scared on the dark!

Eric Alders Little Lost Toy

OH!
I'm a little truck lost
Accidentally tossed
By my little boy
I'm his favorite toy
He is missing me
Screaming like a banshee
While his patient mother
Backs up and finds me

I'm sorry Eric
I cannot explain
What made me do this
Please blame my brain
At my first glance
 I saw those pipes
I just had to meddle
And it wasn't nice
I stepped on the gas
Instead of the brake pedal

Magpie Tales and Eric Alders MPP September 16, 2013

Map provided by Tess Kincaid

Planning a trip is part of the journey
Poring over maps and names of places
Throwing the dice or a dart at a map
And then there's the joy of seeing new faces

photo by Eric Alder

The cherry on top of traveling for me
Is the people I meet and their life stories
Everyone's lives are tapestries woven
Lessons to be learned and never boring.

Judy and Bob 50th Anniversary Surprise Party
Zihuatanejo November 2012

And if you are really truly lucky
You will meet some faces oh so dear
That you will travel many miles to see
Such good friends full of good cheer

The Zihuatanejo Crowd  November 2012
~~~~~
Over the years we have made such good friends
while traveling that we do return time and again
to renew those sweet friendships.
A Quite Tardy MPP
Eric Alder post one of his fine photos
every Monday. I am very tardy as this is
his photo from last week- but since he
is off having fun on Labor Day I will
finally write what came to me today
while looking at this work bench....
It's actually quite appropriate for Labor Day!
Work Bench by Eric Alder
Watching my father attempt a repair
As a small child I did not dare
Ask him how come he was doing it that way
Or why in the heck didn't he pay
Someone else who knew what to do
Leaving him time to take me to the zoo
But rather I watched his frustration
and listened to all his damnation's
Until my sweet mother would come into the fray
Telling me it was time to go out and play.
~~~~~~~~~
