  2. Oh! I know this one.

My father was born on a tiny island called "Fogo" off the coast of Newfoundland. Legend goes that the island was originally called "Ilha de Fogo" by the Portuguese fisherman who originally discovered the place (which I always confuse with the Spanish "Isla del Fuego", and is why your post made me think of this).

Anyway, the island got its name not because of some cool myth or aboriginal creation tale, but because the original settlers thought the best way to clear the island for framing was to burn down all the trees. They literally lit the entire island on fire.

Of course, once the trees were gone there was nothing to hold the soil and all the earth was eroded away, leaving Fogo a giant barren rock in the North Atlantic. And yet people continue to live there hundreds of years later for some reason.

My ancestors were really good at naming stuff. Just not so much at agriculture.

I love comments and will attempt to reply to each one. However, lately I have been getting "Unknown" comments that are linked to some sort of web page. I will never open this sort of comment and will immediately mark as spam. I am not interested in opening something that could be detrimental to my blog security etc. Never have enjoyed hackers! Thanks!
